What are subtle signs of nursing home neglect?

On Behalf of | Jun 20, 2019 | Firm News, Personal Injury |

Sometimes it is easy to tell that your elderly relative has suffered injury because of the neglect of nursing home staff. But are there subtle ways to tell that your loved one in a nursing home is suffering? You may need to look a little closer at the physical and emotional state of your senior relative to understand that a Mississippi nursing home staff may not be providing the proper care.

Next Avenue explains that neglected nursing home residents may exhibit poor hygiene. There are many nursing home residents who require assistance with daily tasks like getting dressed, teeth brushing, bathing, nail clipping and hair combing. If the nursing home is not helping residents with these tasks, the residents themselves have to conduct their own hygiene. Unfortunately, many residents are too infirm to properly accomplish these tasks.

Neglected seniors can also suffer from dehydration or malnutrition. An elderly person who is malnourished may seem weaker than usual and can suffer from declining bone strength that increases the risk of falls. Some seniors need assistance being fed because of difficulty with swallowing or other medical conditions, and if they are not, malnutrition can result.

Unexplained bedsores are also possible indicators of neglect. Many seniors have problems moving on their own. Good nursing homes help their residents exercise and be as active as they can be. However, when a nursing home does not help their residents out of bed or with mobility in general, residents may end up in bed for long periods of time and develop bedsores or other infections.

Nursing home neglect can also produce emotional problems for residents. An elderly person may unexpectedly shrink back from family and friends and enter self-isolation. Abused residents may also exhibit fear of the nursing home staff or refuse to talk about what goes on in the home. Neglect can also result in a senior feeling depressed.

Any of these signs could be indicators that your senior relative is suffering from poor care in a nursing home and should be addressed as quickly as possible. Nursing home neglect can cause problems for residents in many different ways, so only read this article for its information and not as legal counsel for your situation.
