Is the Consumer Product Safety Commission doing enough?

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2020 | Personal Injury |

When a company makes a product, it goes through various channels to ensure that product is safe for consumers. Despite this process, some harmful products still make it onto the market in Mississippi. When this happens, you rely on the government to step in and make things right. The main duty for this falls on the Consumer Product Safety Commission. However, some people think the CPSC is not doing enough to keep consumers safe.

The Washington Post explains that an investigation by Congress revealed the CPSC did not take efficient steps to remove harmful products and protect consumers. This included offering inadequate remedies to people who bought the products, such as discount coupons to buy more products from the same manufacturer or online education programs. There is also a claim that the CPSC allowed companies to avoid recalls by ignoring claims made by consumers or not continuing investigations.

The CPSC’s job is to monitor safety of products and alert you to any risks. If it is not doing this job, it leads to dangerous or defective products remaining on the market with the potential to cause you or someone you love great harm. What is most alarming is the investigation centered on baby products and elevators that pose a fatal risk to children. Not protecting the most vulnerable among us is a huge concern.

The main issue with correcting the problems within the CPSC is the turn over of officials who make up this organization. In addition, politics often play a role in how the CPSC responds to claims, which is another area of concern. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
