Are teens or parents more dangerous drivers?

On Behalf of | Feb 2, 2023 | Car Accidents |

Every time you get in your car, you’re probably well aware that there are dangerous drivers sharing the road with you. It is important to try to avoid driving mistakes yourself and to be as safe as possible. But you also know that doesn’t guarantee you won’t be involved in an accident that someone else causes.

However, it may be a bit more complicated to define which drivers are the most dangerous than you would have assumed. For example, are teens or parents going to pose a greater risk to others around them? An argument can be made for both.

Children are distracting

To start with parents, the issue here is that they often drive with children in the car. Studies have found that children who are crying or pestering their parents are more distracting than cell phones. This is important, because distracted driving has been on the rise lately, and much of this is attributed to smartphone use. Plus, even if their kids are not distracting them, other studies have found that parents are more than willing to use their phone when they have their kids in the car. They could have multiple sources of distraction at once.

Teens are inexperienced

The issue with young drivers is often just that they are not experienced and so they make mistakes that others will feel they should’ve avoided. And it is true that teens have the highest fatal car accident rate, which suggests they are the most dangerous drivers. But they do get significantly better in the first few years that they have a license, as they gain experience.

If you’ve been injured by mistakes made by another driver, then you need to know how to seek financial compensation.
