Can truck drivers use their cellphones?

Truck drivers are constantly on the go. They have to make pickups, transport loads to a different location, make drop-offs by a certain deadline and much more. In order to make this all go smoothly, it’s very important for them to be able to communicate with other members of their team, ensuring that they stay on schedule.

But are they allowed to use their cellphones to do so? Or would that be a significant distraction for someone who drives for a living? How does a truck driver find the balance between safety and communication?

Handheld devices are prohibited

The main thing for truck drivers to remember is that they absolutely cannot use mobile phones that they have to hold in their hand. If a truck driver is holding their phone and causes an accident, they’re going to be liable for that crash because it’s a form of distracted driving.

However, drivers can sometimes use hands-free systems. These typically mean that they only have to push a single button to make or answer a call, so there’s no need to dial and they don’t have to hold the phone in their hand.

For example, a truck driver may have their phone permanently on a mount that is connected to their dashboard. They use Bluetooth to connect to the speaker system in the truck. They’re able to push just one button and then use a speakerphone to hold the conversation while both of their hands are still on the wheel and their eyes are still on the road.

Seeking compensation

This helps to illustrate some of the regulations truck drivers have to follow. If you’ve been injured in an accident by a driver who broke these regulations and acted negligently, you may be able to seek substantial compensation.
