How can you become a defensive driver?

On Behalf of | Dec 23, 2025 | Car Accidents |

There is no guaranteed way to avoid being involved in a car accident. Being a safe driver and following all traffic rules can certainly help, but you could still get in a crash that another driver causes.

One of your best defenses against this possibility is to become a defensive driver. You focus on safety above all else. What are some steps you can take to accomplish this goal?

Plan ahead

For one thing, being a defensive driver means taking your time, not rushing or hurrying and being focused on careful driving at every turn. If you are in a hurry, you may be focused on what you are doing and not paying enough attention to the people around you. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination on time.

Anticipate mistakes

As you observe the vehicles around you, try to identify key mistakes other drivers may make. You can sometimes anticipate these and avoid a crash. For instance, intersections are a common source of crashes, so always be wary that someone may run a red light or go out of turn at a four-way stop.

Increase your following distance

Along with anticipating mistakes, try to give yourself space to react to them. Maintain a safe following distance at all times. Only pass another vehicle when it’s necessary, and do so safely and carefully. If you see another driver acting erratically or unpredictably, give them extra space because they are highly likely to make a mistake.

These tips can certainly help, but you may still be involved in an accident caused by someone else. If you are, be sure you know how to seek financial compensation.
